Theatre Uncut is one of the UK’s leading radical, political new writing theatre companies. We ignite debate, raise awareness and galvanise action by supporting playwrights to create responsive political new writing and making it available for everyone, everywhere.
Originally created as an act of protest to the cuts in public spending in 2011, Theatre Uncut has gone on to produce over 50 short plays by writers from across the world that have been performed in 26 countries across 4 continents. We have created a global community who are using our plays to challenge injustice and reimagine our world.
We have worked with some of the UK’s most esteemed playwrights and championed new voices, we have performed on some of the UK main stages and in community halls, we have collaborated with international companies and created work with local groups. Participation and accessibility are at the heart of everything we do.
Theatre Uncut plays so far have been written by 42 playwrights from 14 countries and have been performed in 32 countries across 4 continents. We have also collaborated with companies in Turkey, Denmark, France and the USA to respond to world events.
The Theatre Uncut Political Playwriting Award has discovered some of the most exciting new political playwriting talent in the UK, with co-productions of the winning plays premiering at the Royal Court and Young Vic and receiving and Olivier Award nomination.
In 2020 we also became trailblazers in digital theatre practice. We now work with universities across the world to explore the politics and creation of digital theatre practice. The digital audience has always been vital to the Theatre Uncut model as we create and connect our global community online.
Uncut Books, our radical political online publishing project, makes our archive of political plays available for the public to buy online at reasonable prices.
Theatre Uncut strives to attract audiences who want to be challenged and actively seek to engage in the world around them.
