The Star and Shadow Cinema is a community owned cooperative in Newcastle upon Tyne. It is 100% volunteer run.
The building which houses a 90-seater cinema, 220-capacity music venue, café, meeting room, Changing Places Loo, workshops and a community garden, is owned by the members.
We aim to connect the diverse communities of the Tees to forge a united area that is free of inequality and division. We are intensely proud of our area’s assets and achievements, and seek to celebrate and champion these qualities. We recognise though that not everyone can share this pride whilst there are immediate issues affecting them. We aim to address this, through addressing issues of power, voice and participation.
Theatre Uncut tackles inequality by supporting playwrights to create new work that raises awareness and encourages debate on social injustice. By presenting our work in theatres, online and releasing it free of charge for groups across the world to perform themselves we aim to galvanise action to create a fairer world.

This initiative empowers people with lived experiences of forced displacement to develop projects which challenge narratives about migration. All projects are based upon four underlying principles including; leadership coming from within the sanctuary community, collaboration across organisations, being trauma informed and creating opportunities for peer support and development.
Warp & Weft explores consciousness, and ways of understanding experiences of distress as they occur within our social and systemic contexts. It looks at what gets called ‘mental health’, also at trauma in a broad sense, and considers approaches to foster liberatory personal and collective transformation.
